How film emulation works: from light to film

Film emulation models how a film stock records light, from exposure and development to a print or a scan, so digital footage picks up the look of film.

01 — Five stages, scene to grade

The film emulation chain

Explore how Ashigrain turns light into film colour, texture and highlights. This page follows each stage of the model, shows the before-and-after view for each film and the datasheet curves behind it, and sets out what is measured and what is approximated.

Image & light

Start by matching Input Color Space and Input Gamma to the image entering Ashigrain. Scene light and Input white balance guide its interpretation as light. Reconstructing a full spectrum from RGB footage requires an approximation.

Exposure & layers

Shape the light reaching the sensitive layers with Exposure, EI override and Camera filter. Halation and Bloom spread highlight exposure before development, using modelled strengths and radii rather than measurements for this film.

Read more in What is halation. See the halo change by gauge in Why gauge matters.

Density & grain

During development, characteristic curves turn each layer’s exposure into density: the amount of light the film absorbs. Grain adds spatial variation; Resolution shapes fine detail. Push/pull behaviour, interactions between layers and grain size are partly approximated.

Read more in What is film grain. See grain change with density in Grain against density.

Output

Encode the result for the next node or display with Output Color Space and Output Gamma, applying the display transform only once. Gate weave and flicker act on the finished image and are off in this example. View grain at full resolution.

02 — One clip, before and after

Follow the path of light

Pick a film to see its before-and-after clip: the original on the left, the Ashigrain reference-model render on the right. The clips are planned media and not yet published; the processed clip will be simulated, rather than captured on film.

Render conditions & image source

Each film gets a short before-and-after clip rendered with the full Ashigrain reference model: 6 seconds at 24 fps, 1280×720, on Super 35 4-perf, through the film’s own print or scan finish, or viewed directly for reversal film. The clips are planned media and are not published yet, so each panel marks where its clip will go and lists the conditions it will be rendered with.

Until then, each film’s page shows a synthetic test chart (grey ramp, ColorChecker, hue sweep, point highlights) before and after the full pipeline; for Kodak Vision3 500T it is the print branch on Kodak Vision Color Print Film 2383, Super 35 4-perf, default controls, exposure +0.52 stops to match the original’s mid-grey, frame 0.

These settings define the simulated lighting; the original location’s lighting was not measured.

03 — Exposure in, density out

Light becomes density

The characteristic curves show how each film turns exposure into density. Start with Kodak Vision3 500T or pick another film. Exposure increases to the right; light absorption increases upwards. Solid lines trace digitised manufacturer data, dashed lines the model, with a marker shape for each layer.

This comparison checks the calibration response. Establishing a match to photographed film would require a separate comparison.

04 — What is measured, and what we chose

Measurements and modelling choices

A film model needs more than a datasheet prints. Some properties come from the manufacturer’s sheet, some are never published for any film, and some describe your shot rather than the film. Here is the whole list, then every film in the catalogue against it.

  • From the datasheet, when it is printed

    Film properties

    • Characteristic curvesDensity against log exposure for each layer: contrast, latitude and colour balance.
    • Spectral sensitivityHow strongly each layer responds to each wavelength.
    • Dye densitiesThe spectrum each dye absorbs, which sets the colours the film can show.
    • GranularityRMS density fluctuation read through a small aperture: how grainy the film measures.
    • Sharpness (MTF)How much contrast each layer keeps in fine detail, by spatial frequency.
    • Exposure indexThe rated speed and the light the film is balanced for.
  • Never on a datasheet

    Modelled for every film

    • Grain sizeSize of the grains or dye clouds that make the grain pattern; sheets give only granularity.
    • HalationRed glow around highlights from light the base reflects, and the softer bloom; sheets name the antihalation layer but never measure the glow.
    • Interlayer effectsHow one colour layer's development changes its neighbours (DIR couplers), shaping saturation.
    • Push / pullHow longer or shorter development changes the curves; a few sheets print pushed curves.
  • About your shot, not the film

    Same for every film

    • Scene lightSpectrum of the light in the scene, of the design light and of footage decoded at a fixed white balance.
      What we assume
      • Spectral reflectance of footage decoded at a fixed white balance (RAW at N K) has no datasheet basis; it applies to every stock.
      • Spectral power distribution of a custom scene light (CCT, tint) has no datasheet basis; it applies to every stock.
    • Metering and camera filtersHow the camera meters a scene and the conversion filters (80A, 85) a sheet prescribes.
      What we assume
      • How the camera meters a scene under an arbitrary light has no datasheet basis; it applies to every stock.
      • Spectral transmission of the conversion filter the source prescribes (80A for daylight stocks under tungsten, 85 for tungsten stocks in daylight).
    • Development, printing and scanningProcess name, how a lab times a print or balances a scan, printer lamp, print aims and fitted print tables.
      What we assume
      • Printer lamp spectrum: no lamp or filter spectrum is in the research set.
      • How a lab times a colour print (or balances a scan) of a negative exposed under an arbitrary light has no datasheet basis; it applies to every negative.
      • Status A aim densities for printing the scene grey: no LAD or laboratory aim is printed.
      • A scanner's colour balance has no standard unit; it applies to every colour negative scan.
    • Projection and displayProjector lamp, projection flare and the neutral silver image of black-and-white film.
      What we assume
      • Veiling flare of the projected image: no document in the research set gives a projection flare.
    • Gate weave and flickerFrame movement and exposure variation, set by the format.
      What we assume
      • Exposure flicker amplitude per format (shutter/transport variation); applies to every stock, it depends on the format only.
      • Which formats have gate weave and flicker on by default (spec B.7 says only "stronger by default for small formats" and flicker "optional, stronger for 8mm"); applies to every stock, it depends on the format only.
      • Gate weave amplitude per format (camera/projector registration steadiness); applies to every stock, it depends on the format only.

Applies to every film. Notes that concern only some films are in each film's details below the table.

Every film, property by property

Cross-checked
Taken from the film's published data and confirmed against a second edition of the sheet or an independent trace.
Datasheet
Taken from the film's published datasheet or handbook.
Datasheet + model
Taken from the film's published data; a model approximation completes it where the source stops (for example beyond the plotted range).
Reconstructed
Rebuilt with a model curve from numbers a handbook prints (such as speed, contrast or peak wavelengths) rather than traced from a plotted curve.
Approximated
The film's published data does not give it; a model approximation is used. Halation is approximated for every film that has it: sheets name the antihalation layer but never measure the glow.
Not used
This film type has no such stage in the model: black-and-white films have no dyes or interlayer effects; print films have no granularity, grain size, sharpness, halation, interlayer effects, push/pull or exposure index.

  18. Development, printing and scanningFitted (GPU) grey-card timing accuracy: the pack's 33^3 light-basis LUT reproduces the spectral grey card's red log H less closely than for the plan 14 stocks, so fitted and spectral printer lights on 2383 differ by up to 0.216 points (plan 14 tolerance 0.2).
  19. Development, printing and scanningPrint LUT fit accuracy on 2383: the 33^3 `print.kodak_2383` table and the end-to-end fitted print follow the spectral print less closely than the existing pairs (validation set dE2000 mean 0.465, max 2.464; LUT max 0.0312 log H) against the existing range (dE2000 mean up to 0.434, max up to 2.343; LUT max up to 0.0278 log H).

  1. Interlayer effects4th-layer fold weight (fourth_layer_fold): AF3-176E prints the 4th colour layer's spectral sensitivity (dashed "Cyan Sensitive Layer", p.8, processed as sensitivity channel C, 474.3-552.0 nm as printed) but no interimage weight; p.7 sections 14-1 and 14-2 describe the 4th layer and the "optimized interlayer effect" only qualitatively; the model keeps three dye layers and ships the fold off (fold weight 0), so the 4th layer's effect on the red record is not modelled.
  2. Dye densitiesPer-dye (C/M/Y) spectral dye density curves: the p.8 Spectral Dye Density chart prints only "Typical densities for a mid-scale neutral subject and for D-mini." (Mid-scale Density and Minimum Density curves).
  3. HalationAntihalation layer: AF3-176E names no antihalation layer, rem-jet or grey base (the p.7 film structure figure is a raster image with no text layer).
  4. Sharpness (MTF)Per-layer MTF: the p.8 chart prints one MTF curve (legend Exposure: Daylight, Process: C-41), no R/G/B curves; it rises to 110.9 % at 2.6 c/mm (above 100 % up to 13.2 c/mm).
