Host compatibility

Use Ashigrain in DaVinci Resolve and other compatible OpenFX applications on Apple silicon Macs. Resolve is our primary application for development and testing. Find your application below for supported versions, rendering options and setup notes.

For help with your setup, contact us with the application name and version. Compatibility updates appear in the release notes.

Support levels

  • Reference host: the primary application used to develop and test Ashigrain.
  • Supported: designed to work with this application, with fixes for reported issues. See What “Supported” means.
  • Compatible: follows the application’s OpenFX support; assistance is provided on a best-effort basis.
  • Not supported: the host cannot load Ashigrain on a Mac, has no Mac version, or is discontinued.

Application compatibility

Application Support Minimum version Rendering Where to find Ashigrain Notes
DaVinci Resolve, DaVinci Resolve Studio Reference host 20 Metal Color page as a node; Edit page as a clip effect The Mac App Store edition cannot activate
Nuke, NukeX, Nuke Studio, Nuke Indie Supported 15.0 CPU, unless Nuke provides Metal An OFX menu item in Nuke’s main menu CPU rendering; Input colour space in Auto
Fusion Studio Supported 17.1 Metal if the host offers it, otherwise CPU OpenFX effects
SCRATCH, Live FX Supported 9.4 (9.8 for Auto colour space) Metal if the host offers it, otherwise CPU OpenFX effects Auto reads the host’s colour space only in 9.8 or later

Baselight Compatible Metal if the host offers it, otherwise CPU OpenFX effects Supports only part of OpenFX 1.4; uses its own colour-space system, so set the input by hand
Natron Compatible 2.5, under Rosetta CPU OpenFX effects Only through Rosetta; CPU rendering; Input colour space in Auto
Silhouette Not supported — — — Runs only plugins Boris FX has qualified
Nuke Non-Commercial Not supported — — — Cannot load third-party OpenFX plugins
VEGAS Pro Not supported — — — Windows only

Any host on Windows or Linux Not supported — — — Ashigrain runs only on macOS
Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, After Effects Not supported — — — Not OpenFX hosts

Minimum version is the oldest version of the host that Ashigrain supports. For most hosts it is the first release that runs natively on Apple silicon.

Rendering shows whether Ashigrain uses Metal or the CPU. Metal is available only when the application provides it to plugins; Flame always uses the CPU. CPU rendering uses multiple cores.

What “Supported” means

For applications marked Supported, we design around their documented OpenFX behaviour and fix reported issues. Applications marked Compatible receive best-effort assistance. If you need help, contact us with the application name and version.

Setup notes

CPU rendering

Metal offers faster rendering, especially at UHD with all effects enabled. Flame and Natron use the CPU because they do not provide Metal to plugins. Nuke also uses the CPU unless Metal is available to the plugin.

Flame shows controls in columns

Flame does not support control pages. It shows all of Ashigrain’s controls in tabs after the “Plugin” tab, with one column per group.

Natron only through Rosetta

Natron 2.5 is built only for Intel Macs, so on an Apple silicon Mac it runs under Rosetta. Ashigrain’s plugin bundle includes an Intel version for this case. This works only while macOS includes Rosetta.

Input colour space in Auto

When the input Color Space is set to Auto and the host does not say which colour space its images are in, Ashigrain assumes Linear / Rec.709 in Nuke and Natron. In every other host it assumes Rec.709 / Gamma 2.4. Baselight passes images in a linear tone curve with the grading stack’s primaries by default, which Auto does not detect. If your images are in another space, set the input Color Space by hand. See the Color Space fields.

Render nodes need their own activation

Each Mac needs its own activation, including render nodes (Background Reactor machines, Nuke render Macs). A Mac that is not activated renders the watermark. See Activate your licence.

Silhouette is not supported

Silhouette runs only third-party OpenFX plugins that Boris FX has qualified. Other plugins “may work but are not officially supported”. Ashigrain is not on that list.

Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and After Effects

Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects use other plugin formats and cannot load Ashigrain’s OpenFX plugin.
